Mehmet Mahir ATASOY

Mehmet Mahir Atasoy, who completed his primary and secondary education in Istanbul, was born in 1978. He graduated from Istanbul University Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine (Medicine in English) in 2001. 

He completed his Radiology Specialization at Maltepe University Faculty of Medicine between 2002-2006. One of the best breast radiologists in the country at Maltepe University, Department of Radiology, Prof. Dr. He had the opportunity to work with Levent Çelik. He also studied “The Contribution of Breast MRI to Treatment Management in Patients with Breast Cancer” as the subject of his specialization thesis.

He worked as a Breast Radiologist at the Turkish Breast Foundation for 2 years. He still continues his social responsibility studies on the board of directors of the Turkish Breast Foundation.

He completed his one-year military service at Diyarbakır Military Hospital.

After military service, Dr. He worked as a radiologist at Siyami Ersek Hospital for 2 years and gained experience in interventional radiology, angiography and stent applications.

Since 2011, he has been working as a faculty member in the Department of Breast Radiology and Interventional Radiology at Maltepe University Faculty of Medicine. Mehmet Mahir Atasoy received the title of associate professor in March 2016.

He focused his studies on new treatment methods and on the non-surgical treatments of diseases that previously required surgery with the developing technology. The main subjects he specializes in treatment with modern methods are; Varicose veins treatment, treatment of breast masses (fibroadenoma), treatment of thyroid nodules and treatments of some cancers, especially liver.

Having successfully applied the treatment of varicose veins without surgery with modern methods to more than 2000 patients since 2011, Prof. Dr. Mehmet Mahir Atasoy is one of the leading academics on this subject. JVIR, one of the most important Interventional Radiology journals in the world, published for the first time its study showing that vessels with a diameter greater than 15 mm can be treated with laser. However, thanks to the FAFS technique he developed, he showed that varicose veins that are too swollen and large can be treated without surgery. He published the FAFS technique in Clinical Radiology, one of the most important radiology journals in Europe.

In addition, in the breast radiology department, he assists his patients in the early diagnosis of breast cancer with advanced imaging methods, breast biopsies and non-surgical treatment of benign breast masses. In the team that presented the first series with HIFU treatment in breast masses in Turkey, Dr. Atasoy works as a radiologist in a multidisciplinary team in which many new diagnostic and treatment methods are applied in breast cancer.

At Maltepe University, Department of Interventional Oncology, Transarterial Chemoembolization (TAKE), RF Ablation and Microwave Ablation methods treat oncology patients with the most advanced methods of modern medicine. 

Dr. Atasoy, whose more than 25 scientific articles have been published in international refereed journals, has been invited as a speaker to many international meetings. In addition to his scientific awards, he also has a patented vacuum biopsy needle.

Prof. Dr. Mehmet Mahir ATASOY, is highly apprehensive that diseases can be prevented to a large extent with a healthy mood, healthy diet and healthy lifestyle, hence is not sufficient enough to make only treatment-oriented progress. Besides his academic career in modern medicine, he also provides training on preventive medicine, functional medicine and integrative medicine in order to help his patients more.

In addition to his many trainings on integrative medicine, he has received training on phytotherapy, ozone and hypnosis approved by the Ministry of Health since 2017. After 2 years of training from the Institute for Functional Medicine in the USA, he received his Functional Medicine Specialization certificate.

As a social responsibility project, he has given Preventive Medicine Seminars in many organizations since 2010. In addition to his public seminars, he also gives training to his medical students and colleagues on the effects of healthy nutrition and lifestyle on diseases. Believing that a healthy mood, healthy diet and healthy lifestyle are very important in preventing and recovering from diseases, Dr. Atasoy is also the chairman of the Preventive Medicine and Functional Medicine Association (KOHEF), of which he was a founding member in 2017.

Prof. Dr. Mehmet Mahir Atasoy, after applying non-surgical treatments with modern methods to his patients who do not want to have surgery in the Department of Interventional Radiology at Maltepe University Faculty of Medicine and in his own private clinic, gives advice from a functional medicine perspective and offers some support.

In addition, he sees patients who want to regain their health, get rid of the drugs they use, or conscious people who want to take precautions before their health deteriorates in the functional medicine clinic.

Dr. Since 2018, Atasoy has been organizing functional medicine trainings on Functional Medicine, which he defines as “Personalized Holistic Medicine of the Future”, in order to provide training to everyone who aims to contribute to human health, especially physicians.   He still continues his education studies with different branch specialists in order to teach Functional Medicine Practices in a multidisciplinary way.

He received his professorship at Maltepe University Faculty of Medicine in 2021. He still continues his academic studies at this university.

Dr. Atasoy believes that quality food supplements should be used because healthy foods rich in vitamins/minerals cannot be consumed too much in today’s conditions. He is one of the founding members of the company, which was established with the aim of becoming a reference brand in food supplements in Turkey with its quality and effectiveness, and  carries out scientific consultancy for REFERANS branded products.
