Infertility

Infertility (sterility) is a complex journey requiring both physical and emotional resilience, beyond being just a biological condition. Medically, it is defined as the failure to conceive after one year of regular unprotected intercourse in couples under age 35, and after six months in couples over age 35. Today, modern medicine, advances in nutrition science, and technological possibilities offer a wide range of solutions for managing this difficult process.

Understanding the root causes of infertility and discovering areas you can take control of in this process is the first step in reducing uncertainty.

Causes of Infertility: Not One-Sided, A Shared Condition

Contrary to popular belief in society, approximately one-third of infertility cases are female-related, one-third are male-related, and the remainder are due to a combination of both parties or unexplained reasons.

Common Causes in Women

  • Ovulation Disorders: Hormonal imbalances such as Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) are the most common cause.

  • Fallopian Tube Blockage: Damage to the fallopian tubes from past infections or endometriosis.

  • Endometriosis: Uterine lining tissue growing outside the uterus can affect egg quality and uterine implantation.

  • Age Factor: In women, egg reserve and quality naturally decline with age.

Common Causes in Men

  • Sperm Parameters: Low count, poor motility, or structural (morphological) problems.

  • Varicocele: Enlargement of testicular veins, which increases heat and can negatively affect sperm production.

  • Hormonal and Environmental Factors: Smoking, excessive heat (saunas, tight clothing), and toxin exposure.

The Effect of Nutrition and Lifestyle on Fertility

The body's reproductive capacity is directly related to its survival mechanism; the body prioritizes reproduction when it feels safe and well-nourished.

  • Insulin Resistance and Sugar: High blood sugar is one of the biggest factors disrupting the ovulation cycle, especially in women. A low glycemic index diet supports fertility.

  • The Power of Antioxidants: Egg and sperm cells are very sensitive to oxidative stress. Colorful vegetables, omega-3 (fish oil), and CoQ10 supplements can improve cell quality.

  • Mediterranean Diet: This model rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, healthy fats (olive oil), and quality proteins is scientifically considered the diet most supporting fertility.

  • Environmental Toxins: BPA in plastics and heavy metals in cosmetics act as "endocrine disruptors." Moving toward natural products as much as possible preserves hormone balance.

Diagnosis and Treatment Methods

Modern reproductive medicine offers a wide range of solutions targeted at the source of the problem:

  1. Hormone Therapies: Used to stimulate ovulation or regulate hormone levels.

  2. Intrauterine Insemination (IUI): Prepared sperm are placed directly into the uterus at ovulation time.

  3. In Vitro Fertilization (IVF): Egg and sperm are combined in a laboratory setting and the resulting embryo is placed in the uterus. Today, with genetic screening (PGT) methods, it is possible to select the healthiest embryo.

Emotional Health: The Invisible Part

The infertility process can bring intense stress, anxiety, and sometimes guilt. However, stress hormones (cortisol) use the same raw materials as reproductive hormones, and continuous stress can push the reproductive system to the background. Getting psychological support, meditating, or joining a support group during this process relieves not only your mind but also your biology.

As you draw your own road map; combining proper medical diagnosis, nutrition optimization, and emotional resilience will be your greatest ally on the path to your goal.
