Informed Steps in Breast Health: Breast Cancer Risk Management and Prevention Strategies

Breast cancer is the most common cancer type among women worldwide. However, receiving this diagnosis is not a "fate." Today, at the point medicine has reached, we aim not only to treat cancer but to identify and manage risks beforehand. Breast Cancer Risk Management is a process in which all factors from a woman's genetic heritage to her lifestyle are analyzed, and a personalized "early warning system" is established.

At our clinic, we do not just intervene when disease is detected; we put at-risk patients under protection before disease even develops.

Recognizing Risk Factors: Unchangeable and Modifiable Factors

Risk management begins with first understanding the current situation. We cannot change some factors, but by being aware of them, we can tighten our monitoring.

Unchangeable Risks

  • Genetic Heritage: Family history of breast or ovarian cancer (especially BRCA1 and BRCA2 gene mutations).

  • Dense Breast Tissue: When breast tissue is radiologically dense, it increases cancer risk and can cause tumors to be hidden on mammography.

  • Age and Gender: Risk increases with advancing age.

  • Early Menstruation/Late Menopause: Prolonged exposure to hormones.

Modifiable (Manageable) Risks

  • Diet and Weight: Obesity, especially in the post-menopausal period, significantly increases risk.

  • Physical Activity: Regular exercise provides protection by balancing estrogen levels.

  • Alcohol and Tobacco Use.

  • Hormone Therapies: Uncontrolled long-term hormone replacement therapies.

Personalized Follow-Up Protocols

Every woman's breast structure and risk profile is different. Therefore, the standard "one mammogram per year" approach may not always be sufficient.

  • High-Risk Groups: In patients with strong family history, we start follow-ups at an earlier age and include more sensitive imaging methods such as Breast MRI in addition to mammography.

  • Women with Dense Breast Structure: In our patients with dense breast tissue, to reduce the margin of error in mammography, we use high-resolution Breast Ultrasound and, if necessary, tomosynthesis technology.

Genetic Counseling and Preventive Approaches

If multiple family members have had breast cancer or close relatives were diagnosed at a very young age, genetic testing should be part of risk management. For patients with detected BRCA mutations, we evaluate with a multidisciplinary team "prophylactic" (preventive) approaches (surgical or medication-based protection) that can reduce risk to rates reaching 90%.

The Role of Interventional Radiology in Risk Management

In the risk management process, at the smallest suspicious finding, the opportunities provided by interventional radiology protect the patient from major surgeries:

  1. Vacuum Biopsy: Suspicious small calcifications or foci can be completely cleared and definitive diagnosis made without need for surgery using vacuum technology.

  2. Fine Localization: If surgery is needed, we mark the mass with millimetric wires or radioactive seeds so the surgeon only removes the diseased area. This is vital for preserving breast shape.

Doctor's Note: Self-breast examination is very valuable, but feeling a mass in your hand means the tumor has reached a certain size. The real goal of risk management is to catch the lesion at a stage when it is still so small (a few millimeters) that it cannot be felt by hand.

Lifestyle Prescription: Reduce Your Risk Yourself

Risk management is not just about hospital check-ups. The following lifestyle changes in your daily life are at least as effective as medical monitoring:

  • Walk at moderate pace for at least 150 minutes per week.

  • Maintain your ideal weight (Body Mass Index below 25).

  • Adopt a Mediterranean-style diet model (plenty of vegetables, olive oil, whole grains).

  • Minimize alcohol consumption.

Conclusion: Act with Knowledge, Not Fear

Breast cancer risk management is a process of managing your fears. Knowing your risk does not weaken you; instead, it allows you to take the right steps at the right time, protecting your life. At our clinic, we create this risk map unique to each woman and stand guard over your health with all the opportunities of modern medicine.

Do not neglect your regular check-ups; do not leave your breast health to chance.
