The Unsung Hero of Breast Heal..

The Unsung Hero of Breast Health: Breast Ultrasonography

While Breast Ultrasonography is often the first method that comes to mind in breast health monitoring, it forms the foundation of diagnosis, especially in young women and individuals with dense breast structure. This method, which creates a detailed map of breast tissue through sound waves, is both a safe and highly effective clinical tool as it contains no radiation and provides real-time imaging.

At our clinic, we use breast ultrasound not just as an imaging test, but as a "guide" that identifies suspicious findings and draws the treatment roadmap.

Why is Breast Ultrasound Necessary?

Breast tissue varies from person to person. In some women, breast structure is quite "dense" (rich in milk glands). This density can cause small masses to be hidden (masked) on mammography images. This is where ultrasound illuminates the "blind spots" that mammography cannot see.

Areas Where Ultrasound is Superior to Mammography:

  • Cyst and Solid Mass Differentiation: Ultrasound most clearly determines whether a palpable mass has liquid inside (harmless cyst) or is a solid mass made of cells.

  • Young Age Monitoring: Since breast tissue in young women is very dense, ultrasound is the first choice in routine follow-up.

  • Pregnancy and Breastfeeding Period: Because it contains no radiation, it is the only method that can be safely used during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

  • Inflammatory Conditions: In suspected breast abscess or mastitis (breast inflammation), it allows us to quickly assess the situation under the tissue.

Imaging-Guided Advanced Evaluation: BI-RADS Classification

Each finding we detect during ultrasound examination is evaluated according to BI-RADS (Breast Imaging-Reporting and Data System), an international standard. This scoring determines the patient's risk level:

  • BI-RADS 1-2: Completely normal or definitively benign findings (simple cyst, etc.).

  • BI-RADS 3: Findings thought to be benign with 98% probability, but requiring close follow-up.

  • BI-RADS 4-5: Findings appearing suspicious that must be confirmed with biopsy.

The Power of Ultrasound in Interventional Radiology

For an interventional radiologist, ultrasound is not just a diagnostic device but a "eye" that surgeons use instead of a scalpel. Many non-surgical treatments we apply at our clinic come to life thanks to the real-time, sharp imaging provided by ultrasound:

  1. USG-Guided Biopsy: When a suspicious mass is detected, we watch the needle hit its target precisely on the ultrasound screen and take samples without millimetric deviation.

  2. Cyst Aspiration: We can immediately relieve the patient by aspirating large, painful cysts with a thin needle under ultrasound guidance.

  3. Ablation Treatments: In cryoablation (freezing) or radiofrequency (burning) treatments, we monitor the complete elimination of the tumor second by second with ultrasound.

Examination Process: What Awaits You?

Breast ultrasonography is an extremely comfortable procedure for the patient:

  • No Pain or Pressure: Unlike mammography, there is no need to compress the breast.

  • Duration: Scanning both breasts and the armpit area generally takes 15-20 minutes.

  • No Preparation Needed: Can be performed on any day of the menstrual cycle (but periods of lower breast sensitivity may be preferred for patient comfort).

Doctor's Note: The experience of the person performing breast ultrasound is very important. This method is "operator-dependent"; that is, the attention and expertise of the physician holding the device directly affects the detection rate of masses. For this reason, having your check-ups performed by radiologists specialized in this field is of vital importance.

Conclusion: Early Detection Saves Lives

In the battle against breast cancer, our most powerful weapon is "time." Ultrasound allows us to catch cancer when it is still as small as a grain of rice, increasing treatment success to nearly 100%. Do not neglect your regular check-ups; protect your health with the power of sound waves.
